About the Fort Centre
A friendly local charity with horses at its heart.
We have been helping disabled children and adults enjoy horse riding in Maghera since 1978.
Who we are
A place where people can feel welcome.
You will find us on Craigmore Road in Maghera. Our centre gives disabled people the chance to spend time with horses, enjoy riding and work towards goals that are important to them.
Our volunteers help riders feel safe, supported and included. They receive training for their roles, including safeguarding and first aid where needed.
The Fort is run by volunteers, so local people are at the heart of everything we do.

Our story
Part of Maghera life since 1978.
Generations of riders, families, volunteers and supporters have helped the Fort grow and continue its work.
1978 — The Fort Centre begins
The Fort Centre opened to give disabled people in the local area the chance to enjoy horse riding.
1980s — Putting down roots
The indoor arena helped the group provide riding sessions in more kinds of weather.
2008 — Arena improvements
Sport Northern Ireland funding helped improve the floor of the indoor arena.
Today — Still powered by volunteers
Volunteers continue to support riders, care for the horses and raise money for the centre.
Looking after everyone
Safety and kindness come first.
Our volunteers follow clear RDA guidance. Relevant team members complete safeguarding, first aid and role-specific training.
Riders can also work towards RDA Grades 1, 2 and 3 if that suits their interests and ability. There is no pressure - every rider moves forward in their own way.
